Hip Hop Planet Pre-Reading

Hip Hop Prereading

In your shared folder in Google Drive, you will find a document with your name called "Reading: Hip Hop Planet." You own it. You do NOT have to make a copy.

Today you will be previewing the article we'll be using over the next two weeks. You do not need to read the whole article today! With a partner, you will work through this Google Form. Together, read and follow the directions. You'll both need to contribute to the completion of this form. It will help you immensely when we read the whole article.

If you are absent, you'll need to work through the form on your own. Indicate that you were absent in the space for Partner 2's name.

NaNoWriMo Summary Document Reflection

Open your NaNoWriMo Summary Document and your English Journal.
After looking at the rubric scores given, answer the following questions in your English Journal:
  1. How do the teacher’s scores compare the scores you gave yourself?
  2. What are your strengths and weaknesses with narrative writing?
  3. Do you want to revise your work to improve your score? What would you change?

If you would like to ask for a regrade of your NaNoWriMo Summary Document, you must email me by Friday, January 16. Check out the tab at the top of the page that says "NaNoWriMo Scoring" for essential information about this process.

Novel Openings

You know what's awesome!?!?
Reading.

Sometimes the most intimidating part of writing is figuring out where to start.

That's what we're going explore today.

Goal #1: Independent reading novel examples. I'll tell you about this in a minute.

Goal #2: Opener Analysis
  • For this activity, you'll work with your partner (the person sitting at the same table as you)
  • Together, you can work through this form to look at examples of openers.
  • You only need to submit it one time. You can each be taking turns to type on the same form.

Read, Write, Talk!

PUNS!
Source: We Know Memes

"Never trust anyone who has not brought a book with them."

Today we have priorities. Let's get to work.

Priority A:
Fill out this form. (I know. We fill out a lot of forms. Trust me: It's a good thing. It only helps you.)

Priority B:
Continue working on your collaborative Google Document from yesterday on setting and mood. Remember: I can look at your revision history to see if all of you are writing/participating/lending your voice to the group.

One piece of advice: WRITE DOWN THE PAGE NUMBER OF THE QUOTE.

I'm putting that in capital letters because I have to remember to tell you about it. Also, it's important.

Priority C:
Group Discussion Questions and writing! Much like last week, take a look at these discussion questions. Answer them as a group, and pick one to answer in your English Journal individually.

If you cannot answer them well, that means you have some reading to do. You'll still need to write a thoughtful answer. Come back to it to add more detail later.

Priority D:
If you read this:
4th period: Remind Ms. Black and/or Mrs. Roberts when we put netbooks away that we have some papers to give you. Then find someone in the room to give a high five.
6th period: When you put your netbooks away, give someone in the room a compliment, then a high five. Then go high five Mrs. Roberts and/or Ms. Black.
