A New Article

Last week I told you that you'd be getting a new article today in which you would NOT be working with people to analyze and write about it.

Today's Goal: Read a new article, annotate it, and complete a SOAPSTone form.

The Plan:
  1. Read
  2. Get a new article
  3. Annotate
  4. SOAPSTone
  5. Recommend a Book

If you were absent, you'll need to come in and spend some time with me during lunch or after school this week to catch up.

NOTE:
Textbook check-in is next Monday, June 8. You will need to bring ALL of your textbooks to English that day.

Reading with SOAPSTone

The Goal: Review the article you read on Thursday and apply the SOAPSTone protocol with a partner.

This is a word cloud of the article.
The bigger the word is, the more times the word showed up in the article.

The Plan:

  1. Read while your computer boots up.
  2. Debrief your first reading of the text. What was your reaction to the article?
  3. Complete SOAPSTone with a partner

Today you will fill out the SOAPSTone FORM about the "Self-Fulfilling Stereotypes" article that you read on Thursday.

Work with your partner to complete the form. Submit the form only once, with both of your names on it. You will need the article from your Google Docs.

Note: You must submit the form before you leave because it will not save your work.

How does doing SOAPSTone help you understand the article better? How and when could you use this in the future?

Does the word cloud at the top of the form help you in any way?

SOAPSTone

Now that we've spent some time digging deeper into McBride's argument, we're going to continue exploring different aspects of nonfiction writing that help us decipher its meaning.

Today you're going to work with a partner to complete a form called SOAPSTone.

Important Dates to remember:
  • Wednesday, January 14
    • TWO book reviews due on Goodreads.
    • I will ask you to give me your links in class. You will not have time to write them in class.
  • Friday, January 16
    • If you want to ask for a regrade on your NaNoWriMo document, you must send me and email by this day.
